Dec. 14th 2008, Belarus / Germany,
Yearly the Belarusian Government tries to end the Chernobyl catastrophe and the traveling of so called “Chernobyl children” which means children suffering from Radiation – caused by the Russian atomic reactor explosion in 1986, which killed hundreds of thousands (acc. to Ukrainian health ministery in 1993: 125,000 deaths) of people – although WHO and IAEA deny it (see HERE why and also HERE).
Since decades international NGOs all around the globe cooperate with Belarusian NGOs to make children travelling possible. For a “Chernobyl child” one week in the U.S. or in an E.U. state is like a year of recovery – as independent scientists told me in Minsk. A contract was never needed, because traveling is a human right.
Not so for Lukashenko and the Belarusian Government. They lately made the Decree 555 public (Oct. 2008 ) (web http://www.president.gov.by/en/) in which they ordered all children traveling to stop immediately. Basically because one girl has not returned from their stay in the U.S. But which country seriously uses this for a step to stop the chance of recovery for all Belarusian children? It’s Belarus! It’s dictator Lukashenko.
He sent a letter to the German Government without the German NGOs knowing, which he wants the German Government to sign. Basically this means a Dicatorship wants to tell a Democracy how to act. This is inacceptable.
10 years ago Lukashenko tried it with his “Memorandum of Understanding” and HE FAILED – the former German foreign minister H.D. Genscher told him to put (quote) “his fingers away from the Chernobyl children”. Also in 2005 Lukeshenko tried it again – and failed, he even told the press he never wanted the Chernobyl children traveling to be stopped. Credit this!
I myself was in a workshop of the Federal Working Agency Chernobyl Germany (BAG Tschernobyl: http://www.bag-tschernobyl.net) and worked on a response to the Decret 555 and the contract made by the Belarusian Government. We went into immediate Action and sent our response (No to the Contract! Traveling is a human right! and much more) to the German Government: Foreign Minister Steinmeier and Environment Minister Gabriel. The BAG also talked to the German Embassador in Belarus in Dec. 2008.
The Belarusian Government wants not only to end Chernobyl with the stop of the traveling they also want to end civil society.
But it was the civil society who brought up the scream and the tragedy of the Chernobyl catastrophe to the world public. Every child is an ambassador itself.
But what did the IAEA say in it’s final report in 2006? “Chernobyl was not so bad… only a few deaths… people who talk about are much worse…”
This is neither scientific nor is it ethic.
The IAEA is not responsible for Health.
But the IAEA gags the WHO – see HERE
So, Belarusian Dictator Lukashenko uses this for his phantom agenda.
More and more villages in contaminated areas in Belarus are being struck off the radiation map (a new one is in the making, because the 2001 version is illegal for years – as my sources in Minsk told me). Still more than 2,000,000 people are living in Belarusian areas – which are contaminated with radiation.
According to my sources, Next Week a high ranking Belarusian delegation visits the E.U. in Brussels. The NGOs in the Netherlands just learned that Belarusian children are no longer allowed to tavel to the Netherlands in 2008. Ireland signed the contract – the orders of a Dictatorship were accepted by Ireland. But there the state was and is involved in children traveling. Not so in Germany and the Netherlands. The E.U. Parliament president Prof.Pöttering (firstname.lastname@example.org) is a German, so the Belarusian delegation hopefully won’t have a chance.
